How Retailers Get a Strong Credit Rating

A few weeks ago I posted about how retailers get a strong credit rating in this industry. The answer surprised some people: you cannot do it alone, and you cannot do it by telling us you are good.

That deserves a deeper explanation, because it is the part that makes the whole thing work, for everyone.

Here is the uncomfortable truth about credit. A rating you give yourself is worth nothing. It has never been worth anything, in any industry, ever. If a company could score its own creditworthiness, every company would be excellent and no score would mean a thing.

The only reason a credit rating carries weight is that the company being rated does not get to write it.

So when a retailer tells us they pay on time, we believe them. But belief is not a rating. We cannot put our name on a number that came from the same party the number is about. The moment we do that, we are not a credit network. We are a publicity service.

This is why Reklaim Credit Solutions is built on accounts receivable aging data from vendors. When your suppliers contribute their AR aging, they are reporting what actually happened. When you paid, how much, how often, on time or late. That is not opinion. That is the record.

It is the difference between a reference letter you wrote for yourself and one written by the people who did business with you.

Now, the obvious worry. What if a vendor gets it wrong, or holds a grudge?

This is exactly why the network matters more than any single report. One vendor’s data is one data point. It can be incomplete. It can be skewed by a dispute that had nothing to do with your reliability. But when several vendors who all do business with you are contributing, the picture corrects itself. A grudge stands out against a record of on-time payments. The signal survives. The noise does not. No single supplier decides your rating, and that protects the good payer more than it protects anyone.

That is the design. Independent evidence from multiple sources, combined with public records, run through our models.

Not self-reported.

Not anecdotal.

Validated by the industry you actually transact with.

We know this asks something of the industry. It means the data has to come from the people extending credit, not the people receiving it. But that is also the reason a Reklaim Credit Solutions CANDEX rating will mean something the day it exists.

It is earned from the record, not claimed from the applicant.

The cannabis industry has never had credit intelligence like this. Reklaim Credit Solutions is building it, and we are building it on evidence.
